Project Background:

In this technical illustration for Solar Today Magazine, I show how a sun tracking photovoltaic mechanism works.  I used curved arrows to show the sun’s path over the day and how the PV tilts to keep pointing toward it and enlarged detail drawings of the actual tracking mechanism.

My Approach:

Like all of my technical drawings in this series for Solar Today, I used a crisp style, but with some sketchy linework accents as a nod to an earlier time when you had to project lines toward a vanishing point by hand.  I painted in a sunflower (nature’s sun tracker) to drive home the point and to add a little cute factor to the image.
